What Does a Voiceover Actually Do?

Question for the floor: What do your parents tell everyone you do for a living? Do they get it right or are they waaaay off the mark?

For a long time my mum told everyone that I worked for a company that was actually one of my clients, and didn’t even attempt to describe what I did day-to-day as it was too complicated apparently (essentially media planning for advertising campaigns…not the easiest to explain I suppose!).

So in that same line of questioning: would YOU know what a voiceover does? Thankfully my mum has a much better grasp of what I do these days, but when I ask people outside of the industry, a lot of people’s immediate association is with voicing Pixar animations and ‘In a Woooorld’ type of movie trailers. If you start tuning in though, you’ll start hearing voice overs pretty much everywhere you go... From podcast ads, the YouTube pre-rolls you try and skip through, self-checkout machines, to having full-blown philosophical conversations with Alexa (or at least just asking about the weather…).

But to answer that question at a more basic level: a voiceover quite literally breathes life into your brand, product or service. It takes whatever you’re explaining or selling and by its very nature makes it more human, relatable and trustworthy, which are attributes I think any business could benefit from.
